Free Opinion is a Crime

We are in a time in which one of the most common terms is actually the one of the "fake news". This neologism, let's put simply, is born as a reaction to something unexpected that happened in the world. It simply happened that in a short period of time, in less than a year, three important political events ended up in an opposite direction compared to the one that the main press and media proposed and suggested. Well, we all know what are we talking about: Brexit, Trump's election, and the Constitutional referendum in Italy. Three events, I shall repeat, in a quite short period of time during which were pushed by the great majority of the media towards a certain direction (without going into details), but that the popular vote has then chosen a different direction to the one that was proposed. Botteri's exclamation from New York, "what we, journalists, are here for if people then do whatever they want?!" is clearly a naivety, but still of a very interesting kind, and very revealing. One of the best moment of Botteri's journalism, I suppose, in which she said the most beautiful truth of her career. Namely, the journalist perceives him/herself and s/he used not as the one who tells the facts, but as the one who guides in the "right" direction a public opinion that otherwise is considered quite stupid to be able to understand by itself. Now, of course, the opinion has always existed, but in here we are talking about a system institutionalised for this aim. A system of this kind cannot accept to fail and comes to the conclusion that this defeat is due to the fact that the independent news has put in place a counter-narrative in respect of the facts as they were told by the mainstream journalism, and such counter-narrative has been more convincing, even though through means infinitely inferior, but it has been more convincing than the, let's say, official one. As we said before, such a system cannot accept this. What was then the counter-measure? To claim that there were pieces of fake news that manipulated the news-system, leading to voting on the basis of fake news. Therefore, the vote that led to such result is the consequence of villains who spread lies, - as if the mass destruction' weapons supposedly belonged to Saddam Hussein had not been a huge fake news with much more collateral damages. Therefore the idea of the fake news is born. Right, once the crime has been established, - "if you give a different reading of the reality compared to mine, official press, you are therefore someone who does not have a different opinion but who spreads falsity. Thus, I made your opinion a crime". Right, once the crime is established, laws follow in order to repress it.
